How digital farming data can support biodiversity monitoring

A recent article in Nature explores how digital agriculture technologies such as drones, smart cameras, soil DNA testing, and acoustic sensors can double as tools for biodiversity monitoring. The researchers suggest that with minimal additional effort conventional farm data could also help track species presence, soil life, and ecosystem health.
The potential benefits are significant. Farms could become “living monitoring sites,” generating continuous, high-resolution biodiversity data without requiring separate surveys. That could lower monitoring costs, improve coverage, and give farmers more direct feedback on how nature on their land is changing. It could also support better policy decisions and more targeted conservation action.
However, the paper also highlights several challenges that must be solved first. Data access and ownership are major barriers. Detailed farm data is often private or controlled by technology providers, which limits its use for biodiversity science. Any system that shares this data must protect farmer privacy and commercial sensitivity to maintain trust.
There is also a risk of bias. Digital tools are adopted more quickly on larger and better funded farms, which could skew biodiversity datasets and overlook smallholder systems and lower income regions.
Finally, most agricultural sensors are not designed for ecological monitoring. Differences in sensor placement, timing, and data standards can reduce scientific reliability. The authors stress that closer collaboration between farmers, technologists, and ecologists will be essential to make this approach both practical and scientifically robust.
