Listening to soil: A new frontier in underground biodiversity monitoring

A new review published in Trends in Ecology and Evolution introduces an intriguing idea: we can measure soil health by listening to it.


The research team, led by scientists at Flinders University, considers the novel field of soil ecoacoustics. Typically soil health is tracked by digging up soil samples and sending them to a lab. With ecoacoustics, researchers place sensors in the ground and record tiny sounds and vibrations produced by soil life and natural processes. Think earthworms moving, insects feeding, roots growing, and even the crackle of drying soil after rain.


This approach could become a low-disturbance, scalable way to track soil biodiversity and ecosystem condition.


For farmers and land managers, acoustic soil sensors could one day act like “health monitors” for fields. Instead of relying only on periodic lab tests, managers could track biological activity trends over time. That could help flag degradation earlier and guide restoration work.


A major hurdle for such analysis is reference data. Scientists still need larger shared libraries of verified soil sound signatures to improve accuracy. The paper calls for shared standards and open methods so results can be compared across regions and projects. Without that, useful data risks staying fragmented.
